The car replaced the Mitsubishi Colt that was sold between 2002 and 2012. Mitsubishi used the Mirage name for all five generations in Japan, with all but the first series badged as such in the United States. Other markets would often sude the name Mitsubishi Colt. The first generation Mirage was launched as a front wheel drive (FWD) three door hatchback in March of 1978 as a response to the 1973 oil crisis. A five door hatchback was launched later that year in September and it featured a longer wheelbase. The Mirage was usually sold as Mitsubishi's entry-level model.
