The luxury crossover SUV's design was heavily influenced by the C-Class passenger car. The SUV has as many as nine airbags fitted, deployed selectively depending on the type of collision and its severity. The GLK-Class was in production by Mercedes-Benz from 2008 to 2015 and it was first debuted in 2008 at the Beijing Auto Show. The "GLK" is an acronym for Geländewagen Luxus Kompaktklasse, taking its name from larger Mercedes-Benz GL-Class, which in turn was named after the G-Wagen or Geländewagen. Its successor is now called the Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class. The second generation of the GLK-Class was released in 2015 and was the X253 model and the GLK-Class was renamed to Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class as per the revised nomenclature adopted by the brand.
