The car was available in two different configurations. These configurations include the ES and the SE. The "Galant" name was derived from the French word galant, which means courteous. The manufacturer has sold over five million Galant vehicles since it was originally released in 1969 by Chrysler. In Japan, the Galant won the Car of the Year Award. Mitsubishi ceased production of the Galant in 2012. There had been a total of nine distinct generations of the Galant with total cumulative sales exceeding five million units .Initial production was based in Japan, but from 1994 the American market was served by vehicles assembled at the former Diamond-Star Motors (DSM) facility in Normal, Illinois.
