Don't let the retro style fool you, the FJ Cruiser was designed for off road performance that is similar to the original Toyota FJ40 Land Cruisers. The SUV was built by Toyota subsidiary Hino Motors in Hamura, Japan and shares many structural underpinnings from the Toyota Land Cruiser. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has awarded the FJ Cruiser its Top Safety Pick and it has received a Good overall rating in all 14 measured categories. The mid size SUV was first introduced in January of 2003 as a concept car at the North American International Auto Show. After positive responses from consumers, its production was approved and it debuted at the North American International Auto Show in January of 2005.
